Trivalent Chromate

Environmentally Friendly Pre-Treatment

Alpha Metal Finishing offers Trivalent Chromate Process (TCP) which complies with the European Union's directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). This chromate conversion process is free from hexavalent chromium and provides excellent corrosion resistance.

TCP complies with the requirements of MIL-DTL-5541, Type II, when applied to most aluminum alloys except the 2000 series:

Class 1A: Provides maximum protection against corrosion, whether painted or unpainted. This is a relatively thick coating used as a final finish or pre-treatment to paint or powder coating.

Class 3: Provides protection against corrosion where low electrical resistance is required. This is a thin coating providing low contact resistance, and the coating weight is lower as is the corrosion resistance. There may be some advantages using a thinner film in bonding applications.

Please note that chromate is not the same as chrome, which is a shiny, mirror-like, additive process. Trivalent Chromate is almost clear with a slight bluish tint.

Note: The cure time for chromate conversion to set properly is 24 hours.

Trivalent Chromate Process (TCP), RoHS CompliantBenefits include:

  • Enhanced corrosion resistance
  • Enhanced bonding ability
  • Electrically conductive
  • Environmentally friendly
